CHRISTIAN YOGA

Yoga, besides all its physical, emotional and psychological benefits is essentially a spiritual practice, yet it does not require of its students to be believers in any particular faith. The classical yoga teachings (Yoga Sutra) do however underline the value of faith in terms of achieving the objective of yoga, that is concentration of the mind (nirodha) and its associated peaceful and blissful meditation state (samadhi) or in western term, contemplation

While the practice of yoga is open to all, believers and non-believers, there is a general tendency to agree amongst traditional teachers that one’s faith is likely (and maybe hoped) to awaken over the course of his/her life as a yoga practitioner in some way. When this happens to Western students, as was the case for me, it can be difficult to manage practicing faith through yoga if one's faith isn't Hinduism, as classes provided in the West containing devotional material are usually from a Vedic (Hindu) perspective only

Joining your Christian faith to your yoga practice can become a great way to learn about and enrich both practices; yoga is a 'how-to' for contemplation (samadhi), a great way to learn the steps to stillness in the presence of God, a practice followed in essence by Christians for centuries. What does this mean practically? Psalm chanting, Bible reading and reflection/meditation (Lectio Divina), and prayers are added to the usual posture and breath work routines, transforming the basic practice into a fully spiritual one
